Here’s a cool idea that not many people have heard of, Underwater Headphones! Imagine swimming underwater listening to your favourite song, or doing laps of the pool listening to fast-paced tracks. It has been proven that listening to music while working out, improves physical performance.

With the rate of technological growth in the 21st century, it is not surprising that new and exciting models of Underwater Headphones are popping out left, right and centre. So, let’s go through some features that you should keep in mind when making a purchase, that way you can be sure you’re getting the best bang for your buck.

How do Waterproof Headphones Work?

Basically, waterproof headphones are normal, in-ear headphones, that have had their internal components and circuitry waterproofed. They can do this in one of two ways. The first is by spraying a thin film of chemical coating, hydrophobic coating to be exact, which repels water due to it’s low-energy surface. The more advanced method is using a military-grade nanocoating, by way of a vacuum environment and plasma activation technology. With these two methods comes the IPX rating, which is the industry standard for waterproofing. IPX starts from IPX0 which means non-water-resistant and goes up to IPX9, which is fully waterproof.

When you’re looking for Underwater Headphones to use for lap practice, we recommend getting nothing less than IPX8. A rating of IPX7 will usually give you around 30 minutes of continuous underwater use in about a 1-meter depth swimming range.

Some Things to Check Before Buying

Here are some good questions to ask before making a purchase of Underwater Headphones:

  • What is the IPX Rating? Is it suitable for the intended use of the headphones?
  • Is it Wireless? Does it use Bluetooth? Keep in mind the Bluetooth does not work too well underwater.
  • Does it have Built-in Controls for navigating tracks and volume, and how easy are they to use?
  • What is the battery life?
  • How secure and comfortable do they fit on you while you swim?

We recommend going through some of these features before buying your own pair or Underwater Headphones, or even buying them as a gift for someone else. Some people may like to use them at the beach, however, not all Underwater Headphones can be used with salt water, so you should check that also.

Read the reviews, do some research and we are sure you will make the right choice for your preferred swimming style and use. But most of all, have fun with them! This technology is really exciting, and we are looking forward to more developments that come out of this field of audio water devices.
