We are all aware of the fact that we need Oxygen to breath. This O2 gets pumped around our body with the help of our blood, and allows us to continue living. Now O3, otherwise known as Ozone, is quite like this O2. As you may have guessed, the difference is that it has an extra oxygen atom. This extra Oxygen atom gives Ozone the ability to share it, and it does indeed love to do just that.
The extra single oxygen atom contained in Ozone, binds with other atoms from other substances, causing them to turn into something else. For example, rust is an example of what happens when Ozone shares one of its atoms with steel.
When Ozone shares its oxygen atom with organic molecules in the water, it oxidizes them, or in effect, ‘eats them up’. That is how you end up with clean, fresh, purified water after an ozone treatment.
Ultraviolet (UV) light is quite a well-known concept, as we are aware that it comes down from the sun and that our skin needs protection from it. In a similar way, viruses and bacteria are harmed from this ray of light too.
How are they affected by it? Well, the energy signature of the DNA and RNA molecules in bacteria and viruses, just so happens to be the same as the energy signature of UV light. When the energy from this radiation hits their DNA and RNA molecules, it breaks down their chemical bonds. As a result, micro-organisms such as algae, bacteria, viruses, cysts and protozoa, cannot reproduce and are killed. Leaving your water free of the toughest of viruses and bacteria, including COVID-19!
The question regarding the costs of these two sanitation systems is quite a difficult question to answer. This is because the price can vary depending on the size of the pool/spa, the location, the manufacturer and so on. But what we can say is that the cost of upgrading your system is well worth it. You will in fact, save money in the long run, due to the reduction of other chemical usage such a chlorine.
